Last U.S. Stop of My Why Tour Slated for Dec. 20 in St. Paul, Minn.

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo.Kendall Coyne Schofield (Palos Heights, Ill.) and Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, Ill.) both netted their first goal of the My Why Tour, presented by Toyota, as the U.S. Women’s National Team fell to Canada, 3-2, in overtime here tonight.

“I thought it was another typical game of this rivalry,” said Joel Johnson (White Bear Lake, Minn.), head coach of the 2021-22 U.S. Women’s National Team. “Obviously disappointing when you can’t find your way to the winning side. It was a little messy in the first from both sides and the second period felt long. The third I could notice our players were playing with more passion and heart, not to take away from their first and second period, but overall I was pretty pleased with how we played.”

For the fourth-straight game of the Tour, neither team could find the back of the net in the opening frame. With Team USA holding a 10-4 advantage in shots, one of its best looks came off the tape of Hannah Brandt (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) in the slot, but Canadian goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer blocked it aside. Canada’s top chance came 14:33 into play with breakaway when USA netminder Nicole Hensley (Lakewood, Colo.) caught a piece of the puck before it rang of the post to keep it tied at zero.

Team Canada came out of the first intermission quickly with Sarah Fillier breaking the tie 1:05 into play and putting Canada ahead, 1-0. Coyne Schofield turned a Canadian turnover into a breakaway during four-on-four action and nearly got a puck past Maschmeyer, who made a point-blank save. Shortly after, Team USA’s penalty kill unit managed the pressure Team Canada put on during a trio of scoring opportunities. Hensley was tested yet again with less than five minutes to go in the middle frame, but stood tall in net and turned away Canada’s last four shots of the period.

Team USA earned a power play less than a minute into the third period and Coyne Schofield potted her first goal of the My Why Tour :58 seconds later. Brandt sent the puck to Hilary Knight (Sun Valley, Idaho) who made a quick touch pass to Coyne Schofield in the slot to tie the game at one. However, Emily Clark regained the Canadian lead for Team Canada 1:04 later to force the U.S. to play from behind again.

Kelly Pannek (Plymouth, Minn.) set up Harmon from the top of the faceoff circle who skated around the Canadian defense and picked the top corner from a sharp angle to tie the game with 7:18 to play. Hensley kept the game winning goal out of the net with less than 10 seconds to play to force overtime for the second-straight game.

The U.S. was held without a shot in overtime as Canada’s Marie-Philip Poulin netted the game winner 3:31 into play.

Hensley started in net for Team USA, stopping 28 shots faced.

The My Why Tour, presented by Toyota, will continue Monday (Dec. 20) against Canada in St. Paul, Minn. at 8:00 p.m. ET.
