Rigsby makes 15 saves for Team USA

The U.S. Women's National Team (1-0-0-2) fell to Canada, 2-0, here today at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit in the final game of the 2019 Rivalry Series, presented by TCF Bank.

"This has been a great week of hockey here during the Rivalry Series," said Bob Corkum, head coach of the U.S. Women's National Team. "Of course we would like to have come out on top here at home in Detroit, but congratulations to Canada on the series win. We look forward to seeing them again at the world championship."

The U.S. Women's National Team will return to action at the 2019 IIHF Women's World Championship April 4-14, 2019, in Espoo, Finland.

Highlights

Both teams came out of the gate with energy as the U.S. and Canada exchanged shots on goal before a U.S. tripping penalty at 4:49 sent the Canadians to the power play.

Canada struck first at the 5:40 mark of the opening period when a Brianne Jenner shot from the point snuck past a screened Alex Rigsby (Delafield, Wis.).

The U.S. picked up the pace following the opening goal, generating multiple chances on Canadian goaltender Shannon Szabados, but could not capitalize before the end of the first period.

Team USA finished the opening frame with eight shots on goal while Canada had six.

The U.S. opened the second period on the power play, once again firing multiple shots on Szabados, but could not find the back of the net.

Canada would score again to bring its lead to two after Laura Stacey connected with Blayre Tumbell, who was streaking to the net and deflected the pass over the glove of Rigsby.

Team USA continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone throughout the second period and went to the power play with 3:18 remaining in the frame. Despite multiple chances generated near the top of the crease, the U.S. could not capitalize and headed to the locker trailing by two after outshooting Canada 20-7 in the second period.

Team USA carried its energy from the second period into the third, pressuring Canada and firing shots on Szabados to open the stanza.

At the 2:23 mark of the period Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Szabados, but the goal was called back after a crease violation.

Following the disallowed goal, the U.S. continued to generate scoring chances, but couldn't break through.

With under three minutes remaining, the U.S. pulled Rigsby for a sixth attacker. After firing several shots on goal in the final moments of the contest, the horn sounded as the inaugural Rivalry Series came to an end.

Rigsby made 15 saves on 17 shots.
